Practicing outside...

Today while Brooke was napping (happy bday Brooke) I went outside with the kids and pushed them on the swings and followed them around with my camera. It was kinda fun. We had a duck fly into the yard so we watched the duck wander around too. It was a great day, warm but cloudy so the sun and time of day wasn't a factor. I got some cute shots. One of which I was a bit off on the focus, which I'm sad about, but I'm still learning. I hid the "out of focusness" up by adding some texture. My favorite is of Jett looking through the fence to see if his friend was outside in his backyard. We found a lady bug and I love that I got around to take the picture, but wish I would have had more of Jett in the background. That's what's hard is the kids move constantly. It's not like I can tell them to hold that right there, so I can take ten more! Constantly moving, makes some things a challenge. I am having a blast though! Wish I could take pictures all day long. Unfortunately, there is always laundry to be done.

What I learned today...

First of all, I learned not to be afraid to use my flash. I thought it was something I needed to avoid if at all possible to obtain that oh so natural look. Instead, I learned I may need it and there are things I can do when using it to make it look more natural. At least this way I can get the picture to turn out rather than suffer with a dark/blurry picture. I played with it today. Flash, no flash. I had to cheat when setting it in manual what to put my shutter speed at if I was going to be using a flash. So, as I make note that I jumped back into automatic mode, it was only for one picture, then it was back to manual. I'm still so proud that I haven't given up in manual. It's hard. Harder than it looks!
The other thing I learned how to do was a story board. So far, again I'm just in the beginning stages and after some time I hope just like my pictures I can create better, cuter story boards. Here is my first attempt.

My first attempt...

Today was Sky's Spring Sing at Challenger. I was determined to take the pictures in manual mode. I was faced with the challenge of being indoors. I didn't want to bail and turn it to automatic which I knew would kick on the flash. I wanted to see what I could come up with. The first few pictures... blurry. I kept trying. I didn't get the most fantastic pictures, but I am proud of the fact that I went for it. I got one that is okay. There are some things that I did right and other things I did wrong. I know I need to invest in a nicer lens and that will help. In the meantime and working with what I have, I found that I have "catch lights" in this picture. Whoo-hoo, I didn't even know what that was until Saturday. My goal was just to be able to adjust the fstop, shutter speed and ISO so that my line was centered. Not that you were wondering, but yes that is brownie still on her face from BREAKFAST! I am so the worst parent in the world but because we were late and running out the door, I let her have one. :)

WOW!

What a day! I am bursting with excitement. I learned so much. I know what f-stop, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO mean and how to use them. Those are the things you must set manually on a camera to take a picture in the manual mode. I feel like I can do it and I'm going to take an oath that I will not go back to the automatic setting on my camera ever again. I promise to try, and by trying I hope to see my pictures improve with each click of the button.

I would post pictures from my first "photo shoot" but I took those pictures in RAW (not JPEG). My computer is such a piece of hud that it doesn't recognize the files. I will show you my first picture I took of an "object" in the manual setting of my camera. Kinda funny, but hey, it's just the beginning to an exciting journey for me.

My class...

Right now I would consider myself a fantastic "point and shoot" photographer. I'm really good at yelling out "cheese" and pushing a button. I have a handy little Cannon digital Elph that does a great job capturing those "point and shoot"moments. My goal is to come away from that a bit and learn the skills needed to shoot in the manual mode of my new camera and the technique to turn those "moments" into incredible photographs. This should be a fun journey to blog. I can't wait for the class on Saturday.

The beginning...

I LOVE taking photos!

When Sky was born I felt the need to immediately go out and buy a digital camera so that I could take a biZillion pictures of her. I thought she was the cutest thing in the whole world and I needed to capture EVERY possible facial expression. In the beginning, when I just had Sky, I would take her to Kiddie Kandid on a regular basis to to capture ALL of the milestones. Now that I have three kids, and lack of a million dollars, I skip past the milestones that I had previously found ABSOLUTELY necessary. So when I discovered the unbelievable talent of Carin Davis I hired her on the spot. I saw that I could afford her to come and do several sessions with my family and most important, new little Brooke. Just the idea of not having to wait an hour walking the mall while I waited for Kiddie Kandid to be ready for me was really exciting. So after a few photo shoots with Carin, I found out more about her and how she started her professional photography business. She was like me, she had little kids and she wanted pictures of them ALL THE TIME. She was given a nice Cannon Rebel not too long ago and has since developed into the incredible photographer that she is. I had made it known to her that I wish she could follow my family around all the time and take their pictures. Knowing this she called me up to tell me she was going to be teaching an all day class on how to use a digital SLR camera. She wanted to know if I was interested. The timing of a few things seemed to be perfect, so I said yes! This is just the BEGINNING. With the guidance of Carin, I purchased a camera and I have signed up for her class. I plan to show you my learning process through pictures.
